If you are moving out of Houston and you have called two or three companies for quotes, you have probably noticed the numbers are all over the place. One company says forty two hundred. Another says seventy eight hundred for what sounds like the same job. It is confusing, and it makes it hard to tell who is being straight with you.
Here is what actually goes into a long distance moving price, and what you should be looking at when you compare estimates.
What a long distance move from Houston typically runs
A long distance move is anything crossing state lines or going far enough within Texas that it becomes an overnight haul. Most interstate moves out of Houston fall somewhere in these ranges:
A one bedroom apartment, roughly 2,000 to 4,000 pounds, usually runs $2,000 to $4,500 depending on distance.
A two or three bedroom house, roughly 5,000 to 9,000 pounds, usually runs $4,000 to $9,000.
A four bedroom or larger, 10,000 pounds and up, usually starts around $8,000 and climbs from there.
Those are wide ranges on purpose. Houston to Dallas and Houston to Portland are both long distance moves and they are not remotely the same price. Treat these as a sanity check, not a quote. If somebody hands you a number far below the low end of these ranges, that is worth a second look rather than a celebration.
The four things that actually move the price
Weight. Interstate moves are priced by weight, not by room count. The truck gets weighed empty and weighed loaded and the difference is what you pay on. This is why decluttering before the estimate saves real money. Every box you do not ship is weight you do not pay for.
Distance. Not just miles. Routes matter. A straight run up I-45 or out I-10 is more efficient than a move to a rural address three hours off the interstate.
Access on both ends. A ground floor house with a driveway the truck can back into is the cheapest scenario there is. A third floor walkup with street parking only, or a high rise with a reserved elevator and a loading dock time window, adds labor hours. Long carries, where the crew has to haul your things a distance from the door to the truck, add cost too.
Timing. Summer is peak season in Houston and prices reflect it. If your dates are flexible, moving between October and April is cheaper and you get more crew availability. End of month is also busier than mid month because of lease turnover.
What adds cost that people do not expect
Packing services are priced separately from transport. You can pack yourself and save, but understand that most movers will not cover damage to boxes you packed yourself, since they cannot verify what went in or how.
Specialty items get their own line. Pianos, safes, large gun cabinets, oversized art, pool tables, and antiques all require different handling and equipment. If you have any of these, say so up front. An estimate that does not account for your upright piano is not an estimate you can rely on.
Storage in transit, if your new place is not ready when your things arrive, is a separate charge and a separate logistical step.
Shuttle service comes up when the moving truck physically cannot reach your address. Narrow streets, low bridges, tight subdivision turns. The load gets transferred to a smaller vehicle, which means extra labor.
Valuation coverage is not insurance, though people use the words interchangeably. Basic released value coverage is included by law and it pays sixty cents per pound per item. That means a fifty pound television that cost you eight hundred dollars pays out thirty dollars. Full value protection costs more and is worth it for most households.
How to read an estimate so you are comparing the same thing
There are three kinds and they are not equal.
A binding estimate locks the price for the inventory listed. If your shipment matches what you told them, the price does not move.
A non binding estimate is a good faith guess. The final price is based on actual weight, and it can come in higher.
A binding not to exceed estimate is the one you want. You pay the estimate or the actual weight, whichever is lower.
Ask which one you are being given, in writing. A company that will not put the estimate type in writing has told you something about how the rest of the move will go.
Before you sign with anybody
Verify the company is licensed for interstate work. Every legitimate interstate mover has a US DOT number and an MC number, and you can look both up for free at the FMCSA website. If a company cannot produce those numbers, they are not legally permitted to move you across state lines.
Get the estimate after a real survey of your home, in person or by video walkthrough. A price quoted over the phone from a room count is a number designed to get your deposit, and it tends to grow on moving day.
Ask how long the company has been operating under its current name. Long distance moving has a churn problem, and businesses that fold and reopen under new names are common enough to watch for.
